'The final criminological frontier: Envisioning space crime in VR', 2023

Understanding space crime with VR

When we think of space, we often imagine adventure, technological advancements, discoveries and positive possibilities. However, we rarely consider the inevitable reality that crimes will also occur in space. This project takes the first step in understanding space crime. Researchers are creating a Virtual Reality (VR) environment where participants experience a crime scenario aboard a spaceship. Half of the participants also experience the same scenario without VR. Along with physical measurements taken during the scenarios, participants are asked whether their perception of space crime has changed.

This project is the first in a new research line within the Secure Societies impact coalition, exploring an exciting and uncharted area within criminology. By gaining deeper knowledge and understanding of space crime and human reactions to it, the researchers aim to be at the forefront of this emerging field.
