Building a sustainable future together

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and the University of Twente (UT) are joining forces to make a greater impact in four key societal domains: Secure Societies, Responsible Societies, Smart Societies and Talent.

Through joint efforts in education, research and valorisation – the application of scientific knowledge to real-world challenges – we are dedicated to a future where science, technology and society work hand in hand to tackle the most pressing issues of our time.

Our partnership aims to develop multidisciplinary, innovative solutions that not only lead to scientific breakthroughs but also bring about practical, sustainable changes for society.

Our mission

VU Amsterdam and the UT are collaborating to address the biggest societal challenges of our time. From climate change and social inequality to digital security and the transition to a circular economy, we are committed to developing effective solutions. Our work focuses on four core themes: Secure Societies, Responsible Societies, Smart Societies, and Talent.

By integrating education, research and the application of scientific knowledge, we create practical, evidence-based solutions. This approach not only drives innovation but also fosters a strong network of collaboration across disciplines, regions, and industries – extending far beyond the university itself.

Social focus

Our joint efforts are focused on four core areas that will shape the future of society:

Secure Societies
We create innovative solutions to enhance the resilience of communities and systems against social unrest and crises, such as pandemics.

Responsible Societies
Through interdisciplinary research and practical innovations, we work towards a society where raw materials are reused efficiently, climate change is mitigated, waste is minimised and the transition to a circular economy is accelerated.

Smart Societies
We explore the role of technology and data in fostering inclusive, sustainable societies that are resilient economically, environmentally and socially.

Talent
We focus on equipping professionals with the technical expertise and social awareness needed to address the challenges of the future.

Collaboration as a strength

Our collaboration goes beyond academic value. We build bridges between regions (East Netherlands and the Randstad), disciplines, and diverse social groups – connecting companies, governments, students and researchers. This integrated approach not only strengthens the impact of our universities but also benefits the labour market and society as a whole.

Our complementary strengths allow us to develop impactful research and education programs while formulating strategic proposals for national and European funding opportunities. This strengthens both universities' positions in a highly competitive international environment.
