The partnership

From education to impact: our shared ambitions.

Innovation through the connection of knowledge and disciplines

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and the University of Twente (UT) are collaborating to tackle the most pressing societal challenges of our time. By combining technical innovation with societal expertise, we are developing sustainable solutions for a future-proof society.

From joint education to pioneering research, our partnership not only drives scientific progress but also strengthens regions, businesses and society as a whole.

Complementarity as a source of strength

The collaboration between VU Amsterdam and the UT is based on complementary areas of expertise and a shared ambition to create social impact. VU Amsterdam specialises in social sciences, while the UT excels in technical innovation. By combining these strengths, we address complex issues and develop sustainable solutions to societal challenges.

Connecting the ecosystems in the Northern Randstad and Eastern Netherlands enhances our collaboration with businesses, governments and civil society organizations, fostering sustainable growth in both regions.

Our collaboration in action

Our joint efforts are realised through concrete initiatives that create tangible social impact:

Education and talent
The joint undergraduate programs in Mechanical Engineering and Creative Technology in Amsterdam play a key role in addressing the shortage of skilled professionals by training technical talent. We are also developing new programs, including plans for join undergraduate programs in Twente, master’s and bridging courses in Twente and a Tech Campus in Amsterdam.

Future ambitions

Our plans for 2030 are built on four key pillars:

Joint programs and a Tech Campus
We will develop joint undergraduate and graduate programs and establish a Tech Campus in Amsterdam to train versatile, socially responsible technicians.

Continuous learning pathways
By offering a wide range of alpha, beta and gamma sciences and technology courses, we provide flexible learning options for students, staff and alumni, including new and enhanced programs.

Multidisciplinary approach to social issues
By integrating alpha, beta and gamma sciences and technology, we tackle complex challenges such as climate change and social inequality, with a focus on four core themes: Secure Societies, Responsible Societies, Smart Societies and Talent.

Connecting ecosystems
By linking the Northern Randstad and Eastern Netherlands, we create opportunities for joint appointments, strengthen regional networks and become an even more attractive employer.
