Responsible Societies impact coalition

The Responsible Societies impact coalition works towards a clean, sustainable and future-proof society, balancing the needs of people, the environment and the economy.

A clean and sustainable society

Our society faces major challenges: transitioning to a circular economy, achieving net zero emissions and developing resilient systems that can withstand climate change and natural hazards. These transitions require innovative solutions and close collaboration between cities and regions, as well as between science and practice. For example, the densely populated Randstad faces different challenges than the rural border region of Twente, requiring tailored solutions.

Working together on complex sustainability issues

To tackle these complex sustainability challenges, we unite experts from diverse disciplines and sectors. Through the Responsible Societies program, we are building a strong network that connects science, businesses, civil society organisations, governments and citizens. This collaboration allows us to develop and assess solutions that are not only effective but also socially and ecologically responsible.

Focus areas

To address these pressing issues, we have identified five key focus areas that contribute to a clean and sustainable society:

  • Urban climate: Nature-based solutions for livable and future-proof cities.
  • Responsible use of natural resources: Sustainable extraction, use and recycling of natural raw materials.
  • Natural hazards and societal impacts: Mitigation and adaptation strategies for climate and natural disasters.
  • Net zero emissions: Technologies and strategies to achieve net zero emissions.
  • Education in earth, environmental, climate and sustainability sciences: Advancing learning and knowledge-sharing in sustainability.
