Creative Technology

Where creativity, technology and social impact come together.

Creative Technology

Creative Technology (CreaTe) is a multidisciplinary bachelor's program that combines design, computer science and electrical engineering. This joint initiative between the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and the University of Twente (UT) focuses on translating end-user needs into innovative products and services that address technological and societal challenges, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and social impact.

Students in the program learn to transform complex challenges into practical, technical solutions that contribute to a better world. CreaTe at VU Amsterdam was named a ‘Top Program’ in the Keuzegids 2025, following the same recognition for the program at the UT in 2024.

Two universities, one program

CreaTe is a joint program between VU Amsterdam and the UT, giving students the opportunity to tap into the expertise of both institutions. UT students can take electives at VU Amsterdam, while VU Amsterdam students have access to the UT’s advanced labs for practical assignments and projects.

This collaboration offers students a unique chance to learn in two distinct academic environments, benefiting from the strengths and resources of both universities.

Innovative education focused on creating social impact

As part of CreaTe, students tackle challenging projects that address real-world social issues, such as smart healthcare solutions, for example. The program is project-based, allowing students to not only learn the theory behind design but also to build and test prototypes.

Working in multidisciplinary teams, students go through all stages of the design process – from initial concept to fully functional product. This hands-on approach ensures the program is both technically rigorous and socially relevant.

A comprehensive education with promising future opportunities

CreaTe is a three-year English-language bachelor's program that provides students with a solid foundation in design, computer science and electrical engineering. They learn to translate end-user needs into innovative products and services that address technological and societal challenges and contribute to a more sustainable world.

With a VWO diploma, students can start the program regardless of their profile. The flexible curriculum allows them to specialise later on and, with the right minor, continue their studies in fields like electrical engineering, AI or industrial design, or embark on a career in the technology sector.

From idea to impactful solution

Throughout the program, students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also develop practical skills. They learn to create working prototypes and use their creativity and technical expertise to drive social innovation.

Many CreaTe students go on to become entrepreneurs. For instance, two CreaTe students invented Homey, a smart home platform that is now successful globally and was acquired by LG.

Zoë Meijer, Creative Technology student Together with students from Stanford University, I worked on improving a widely-used professional videoconferencing system. We conducted a user survey, held interviews and developed a prototype. It was an exciting and insightful project that was both enjoyable and educational.
