Researchers from VU Amsterdam and UT are developing a VR rowing simulator to improve rowing training, human-machine interactions and sports performance.
Rowing in virtual reality
In this project, researchers from VU Amsterdam and the UT, in collaboration with RP3 Rowing, are exploring the potential of virtual reality (VR) in rowing training. The team developed the first-ever VR multi-person rowing simulator, enabling rowers from around the world to train together virtually. Beyond its practical applications, the 'Rowing Reimagined' platform also opens up new avenues for research, particularly in physical movement, performance and human-machine interaction. The platform was introduced at a symposium at the Amsterdam Institute of Sports Sciences in June 2023, where it was presented to a global audience from industry, academia and rowing practice. The platform is now permanently displayed at the UT's Interaction Lab and VU Amsterdam's Human Movement Science Lab, providing opportunities for future students and researchers to explore rowing and sports in a VR environment.
