Reduction Scope 3 Emissions from fossil fuel companies
Fossil fuel companies, along with other organisations, are under increasing pressure to reduce their emissions. This includes Scope 3 Emissions, which encompass all indirect emissions throughout a company's value chain. These emissions are challenging to measure, define, and account for, and the responsibilities of different stakeholders in this process remain unclear. This creates new questions around regulation and the voluntary actions companies should take.
In this project, an interdisciplinary team from VU Amsterdam and the UT has explored significant trends, established a network of stakeholders for further research, and identified key research questions. For instance, does a carbon take-back obligation hinder the phase-out of fossil fuels? At what level should carbon take-back be managed? How can end users be held accountable for their indirect emissions? And how can citizens be made aware of their personal fossil fuel consumption and its environmental impact?
Through workshops with stakeholders, the researchers developed a research agenda, which is detailed in the final report.
