Researchers from VU Amsterdam and the UT identify trends and research questions to reduce Scope 3 emissions at fossil fuel companies.

Reduction of Scope 3 emissions of fossil fuel companies

The 2022 cohort of the Internal Call projects from the Responsible Societies impact coalition has delivered its first results.

The project ‘Reducing Scope 3 Emissions of Fossil Fuel Companies; Challenges, Opportunities & Research Gaps’ focuses on reducing Scope 3 emissions from fossil fuel companies. Scope 3 emissions are all indirect emissions that occur within a company’s value chain. The key results of the project include the identification of major trends related to Scope 3 emissions, the creation of a stakeholder network for further research and the identification of several key research questions.

  • For example, does a carbon capture obligation hinder the phase-out of fossil fuels?
  • At what level should carbon capture be organised?
  • How can end-users be held accountable for their indirect emissions?
  • And how can citizens be made aware of their personal use of fossil fuels and its environmental impact?
