Prototyping with cardboard at the DLAB Makerspace
As part of their study of human-centred design, first-year Creative Technology students recently visited the DLAB Makerspace for a short showcase on the possibilities of using cardboard and laser cutting for rapid prototyping.
Made from renewable cellulose, cardboard is eco-friendly and highly recyclable. In the Netherlands, 89% of cardboard was recycled in 2023. At the DLAB Makerspace, sustainability is a key focus in the design process, and cardboard is not only a responsible choice but also safe and easy to work with.
When used correctly, cardboard can be surprisingly sturdy. By stacking, layering and gluing, durable 3D models can be created. Several prototypes were showcased during the session to demonstrate how to make the most of this versatile material.
