Creative Technology at VU Amsterdam has been recognised as a 'Top Program'. Merijn Snel reflects on this milestone and the journey so far.

Creative Technology in Amsterdam: a special recognition as a ‘Top Program’

Recently, we proudly shared that the bachelor’s program Creative Technology (CreaTe) at VU Amsterdam has been recognised as a ‘Top Program’ by the Keuzegids 2025. CreaTe is a joint initiative by VU Amsterdam and the UT, bringing together design, computer science and electrical engineering.

Merijn Snel, Location Director of Creative Technology in Amsterdam, explains:

"This recognition is especially meaningful because the CreaTe bachelor’s program only launched at VU Amsterdam in 2023. From day one, students and staff have worked closely together to build a strong and inspiring program.

Our first cohort of students is now completing the Interaction Design module and will soon dive deeper into AI. Meanwhile, our current first-years have successfully completed the challenging Smart Environments module. On Friday, 24 January, they presented their results – a great opportunity to celebrate their hard work."

Challenges and growth

"Setting up a new program naturally comes with challenges," Snel continues. "How many students will enrol? Is the team complete? How will the collaboration between VU Amsterdam and the UT unfold? And how do our students feel about having part of their education take place in Twente?

Not everything went smoothly at first, but we’ve learned a lot along the way. We’ve optimised schedules, expanded our team and improved facilities. Thanks to the dedication of our students and their valuable feedback, we’ve been able to strengthen the program step by step. Receiving the ‘Top Program’ recognition despite these challenges shows how much our efforts are valued – both by our team and our students. That’s something we can be incredibly proud of!"
