Towards more nature inclusive cities

Cities are not nature and that is a problem. Cities disrupt natural processes and this leads to flooding and water shortages, heat islands and air pollution. This is why the UT and the VU join forces for more nature inclusive cities within the impact coalition Creating Responsible Societies. A workshop on this topic took place last April. In the workshop, participants from education & research, business, government and civil society discussed the latest projects and the necessary follow-up steps.

Sean Vrielink of the UT introduced plans for experimental green roof and walls in UT's Living Innovation Lab. Students of Industrial Design developed a demonstration model of a green roof and analysed the sustainability of blue-green infrastructure. Michiel van de Bunt of Zinco and Tom Lentfert of Wavin came up with project proposals for rain energy and the polder roof respectively. Both projects use rainwater in their own way for water management, biodiversity and well-being. Aurélio Wijnands of Green Panels designs green panels for pitched roofs. These panels provide carbon absorption, biodiversity, water retention and cooling.

The participants found it useful to engage in cross-sectoral discussions. However, large-scale change requires strong policies, targeted funding and citizen involvement. This will be worked on further in funding proposals and a subsequent workshop.
