'Exploring drug-related subversive crime in the Metaverse: a multi-method approach to understanding drug dealing actors, their behaviours and their relations to virtual reality environments', 2022

Drug-related crime in the Metaverse

Mark Zuckerberg's introduction of the Metaverse offers a new hybrid way to enrich our lives. However, policymakers warn that it may also become a hotspot for criminal activity, particularly illegal drug trafficking. Due to the immersive nature of the Metaverse, VR researchers have found that participants not only feel a real-life presence but also perceive the other person as real. This is crucial for building trust in illegal transactions.

In this project, researchers are examining the accessibility of the Metaverse from the perspective of its users. They also investigate how users and dealers may adapt or modify their methods of operation and drug use in and because of the Metaverse. The goal is to establish a network that connects crime and various technologies to combat the drug problem and contribute to a safer society.
