Climate-proof cities with blue-green roofs

This project explores innovative solutions for blue-green infrastructures, which have gained increasing attention in recent years as urban environments seek climate- and water-resilient adaptations. Among these innovations is the design and development of modular "blue-green roof systems" that expand traditional roofs to integrate vegetation and plant-growing areas. However, significant societal and technical challenges remain in accelerating the adoption of these nature-based infrastructures. In April 2023, a successful networking event brought together key stakeholders – building professionals, policymakers, civil society organisations, research institutions and homeowners. Moving forward into 2023/2024, the project aims to develop and showcase a full-scale demonstration model of a blue-green roof structure in public spaces in Amsterdam and Enschede.
