The Executive Boards of VU Amsterdam and the UT have jointly decided to continue with the Mechanical Engineering programme at VU Amsterdam. The programme exploits the potential in the region, meets a need, brings more technicians to the market as intended and the student appreciation is high. In addition, the collaboration with the UT is pleasant, embedding within VU Amsterdam is taking shape and the atmosphere among students and teachers is good.
Goals achieved
The decision stems from the contract between the two universities. The contract stated that an evaluation would take place after five years, followed by a consideration of whether or not to continue. Remarkably, the original goals were actually achieved, for example with regard to utilising the potential of students in the province of Noord Holland and the greater Amsterdam region. The boards are further very satisfied with the quality of the programme and the student numbers.
Evaluation and interviews
A direction group with stakeholders first drew up an actual evaluation, according to the criteria included in the contract. In addition, talks were held with the faculty boards of VU Amsterdam and UT, the management of the VU Physics Department, the programme management and lecturers. The pros and cons of a joint degree were also listed. However, the advice on the form in which the programme should be continued requires more effort. This part will be submitted to the steering committee after the summer.
